Colorful Pinya Festival


The municipality of Calauan, Laguna is known for their sweetest pineapples and they celebrate their festival called “Pinya Festival” every 15th of May. The patron saint of Calauan is St. Isidore Laborer, the patron of farmers. The town got its name from the tagalog word kalawang, which means rust.

The town of Calauan is said to be the number one town to produce sweetest pineapples in the region of CALABARZON. And the “Pinya Festival” is celebrated every May 9 up to May 15.  Calauan is known for the rich agricultural, particularly in growing pineapples in the country.

Some of the festival highlights are the Mardi Gras or Street Dance, Float Parade, Beauty Pageants not only for young beautiful ladies of Calauan but also for the gentlemen, lolo and lola, and for the LGBT community. These remarkable events are just some of the reasons why Calauan is a colorful and pleasant place to live in.

In celebration of the festival there’s also exhibit or trade fair of the local products of Calauan which is made of pineapples like pineapple jams, pineapple candies, and pineapple bars which are made by Agriculturist Anna Roselle A. Garcia, the founder of Piñana Gourmet Food Products. She was the first to discover products made from pineapples in the municipality. And she was resourceful, creative, and innovative enough not to waste any of it. One of Agriculturist Garcia's Piñana products is Piñatuyo which is made of “tuyo” or dried fish mixed with the sweetness of pineapple. They also discovered that pineapple skin can be used to make "champoy" in which they call it as "Piñachampoy". They also have Piñapie which is basically a pineapple pie in which its crust is baked to its perfection.

According to the festival coordinator, Limwell Marasigan, Calauan is one of the largest producers in the province of the sweet and delicious ingredients in Halo-halo. Halo-halo is a well-known delightful dessert among Filipinos. Halo-halo ingredients is mainly a mixture of sweetened natural fruits, evaporated milk and crushed ice.

And the festival also sponsored seminars for their local farmers to expand their knowledge and to be given opportunities for the betterment of the agricultural sector. The farmers and agricultural workers were given the acknowledgment and appreciation they always deserve. This festival is for basically for everyone since everyone is given an equal chance to be recognized and acknowledged.
